An NGO moved the Supreme Court Tuesday seeking direction to the Rajasthan government to enforce a complete ban on mining activities in Alwar district as ordered by the court earlier.<\/p>\n
Senior counsel V. Giri, appearing for NGO Society for Awarness and Development, told the apex court vacation bench of Justice K.S. Radhakrishnan and Justice J.S. Khehar that despite the court’s direction prohibiting mining it was going on illegally.<\/p>\n
The court would next hearing the case June 8.<\/p>\n
The senior counsel drew the attention of the court to reports of deaths of labourers engaged in illegal mining in the state.<\/p>\n
He referred to a newspaper report of May 18 which said that 10 labourers were trapped under debris during illegal mining in Choharpur village in the district.<\/p>\n
The NGO said that the government by its deliberate and malafide inaction to check illegal mining had made the direction to ban mining ineffective.<\/p>\n
The petition said that illegal mining was going on unabated in 11 villages of tehsil Tijara and Bhiwari.<\/p>\n
Illegal mining was not only depleting the forest cover but also eroding the hills in the Aravali Range, it said.<\/p>\n
The NGO drew the attention of the court to the report of the central empowered committee on environment matters which pointed to massive illegal mining in reserved forest areas in Udhanwas village.<\/p>\n
The petitioner directions to the Haryana government to make stone crushers in districts Faridabad, Gurgaon, Mewat, Mohindergarh and Bhiwani, all close to Alwar, to present their stock register and supporting documents as evidence of their purchase of raw material from legally mined sources.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
