{"id":21015,"date":"2012-06-20T18:12:14","date_gmt":"2012-06-20T12:42:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.legalindia.in\/news\/?p=21015"},"modified":"2012-06-20T18:12:14","modified_gmt":"2012-06-20T12:42:14","slug":"bhandarkar-copyright-case-court-reserves-order","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.legalindia.com\/news\/bhandarkar-copyright-case-court-reserves-order","title":{"rendered":"Bhandarkar in copyright case: Court reserves order"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>A Delhi court has reserved its order for June 27 on an author&#8217;s plea for lodging a first information report (FIR) against Bollywood filmmaker<span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/topic\/Madhur-Bhandarkar\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">Madhur Bhandarkar<\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/em><em> for copying the plot of his 2008 film <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">&#8221; <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/topic\/Fashion\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><em>Fashion<\/em><\/span><\/a><\/strong>&#8220;<\/span> from her book.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Sanjay Sharma<\/span> said that the court would June 27 decide on the plea filed by book author <a href=\"https:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/topic\/Seema-Seth\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">Seema Seth<\/span><\/a> seeking compensation of Rs.2.5 crore.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;To come up June 27 for orders,&#8221; said the court, in an order made available Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>The court was hearing a plea by actress-turned-author Seth alleging that Bhandarkar stole the plot and idea for <em>Fashion<\/em> from her book <span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/topic\/El-Dorado\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><em>El Dorado<\/em><\/span><\/a><\/em> <\/span>which was published three months before the release of the film Oct 29, 2008.<\/p>\n<p>She requested the court to book Bhandarkar for violation of the <span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><a href=\"https:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/topic\/Copyright-Act\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">Copyright Act<\/span><\/a>,<\/span> as the idea of the story had been taken from the book without permission.<\/p>\n<p>Seth also made Ronnie Screwvala of UTV Motion Pictures a party in the case.<\/p>\n<p>The idea has been stolen from the &#8220;book wherein the story begins in Kolkata, where an aspiring model wishes to go to Mumbai but her father opposes and mother supports&#8221; the idea.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Careful reading of the said book vis-a-vis the story of the said movie would conclude that the story\/script has been taken from the said book without my permission&#8221;, she contended<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Delhi court has reserved its order for June 27 on an author&#8217;s plea for lodging a first information report (FIR) against Bollywood filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar for copying the plot of his 2008 film &#8221; Fashion&#8220; from her book.
