{"id":21602,"date":"2012-07-09T14:50:47","date_gmt":"2012-07-09T09:20:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.legalindia.in\/news\/?p=21602"},"modified":"2012-07-09T14:50:47","modified_gmt":"2012-07-09T09:20:47","slug":"sc-seeks-details-of-sites-damaged-in-gujarat-riots","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.legalindia.com\/news\/sc-seeks-details-of-sites-damaged-in-gujarat-riots","title":{"rendered":"SC seeks details of sites damaged in Gujarat riots"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>The <span style=\"color: #800000;text-decoration: underline\"><strong>Supreme Court<\/strong><\/span> on Monday directed the Gujarat government to file a survey report of the religious sites which were damaged and destroyed during the 2002 <span style=\"color: #800000;text-decoration: underline\"><strong>Gujarat riots<\/strong><\/span> in the state.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0A bench of <span style=\"color: #800000;text-decoration: underline\"><strong>justices K S Radhakrishnan and Dipak Misra<\/strong><\/span> also asked the state government to quantify the amount needed for building and repairing those sites that were affected by the riots.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0The court gave the directions on an appeal filed by the Gujarat government challenging a <span style=\"color: #800000;text-decoration: underline\"><strong>Gujarat High Court<\/strong> <\/span>order directing it to pay compensation for damage and destruction of the religious sites.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0At the very start of the proceedings, the Gujarat government said that the state exchequer could not be used for building and repairing religious sites.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0The bench, however, said it would look into the issue whether public funds could be used for restoring the damaged sites in Gujarat riots.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #800000;text-decoration: underline\"><em>\u201cYou compensate if a house is washed away in a flood or if it is damaged in an earthquake.
