{"id":21655,"date":"2012-07-10T17:22:07","date_gmt":"2012-07-10T11:52:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.legalindia.in\/news\/?p=21655"},"modified":"2012-07-10T17:22:07","modified_gmt":"2012-07-10T11:52:07","slug":"cbi-to-be-more-powerful-govt-enacting-law","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.legalindia.com\/news\/cbi-to-be-more-powerful-govt-enacting-law","title":{"rendered":"CBI to be more powerful, govt enacting law"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Taking a step forward in its fight against corruption, the Centre is considering a recommendation to give more powers to<span style=\"color: #800000\"><strong> CBI<\/strong><\/span> by enacting a law which will empower it to probe graft cases nationwide without the consent of the state governments.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0If it comes into being, the proposed law will give statutory powers to the investigation agency specifically to look into corruption cases and prosecute offenders all over the country, highly placed official sources said.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0As per the proposal, which is at a nascent stage, the law will be enacted close on the lines of the <span style=\"color: #800000;text-decoration: underline\"><strong>National Investigation Agency Act, 2008<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Sources said the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions will soon hold a meeting with Ministry of Law and Justice and certain officials of the CBI to devise a road map for the legislation.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0&#8220;<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><em>The government is considering a proposal for giving statutory powers to CBI. Its main thrust is to minimize overlapping powers of state and central government investigating agencies,&#8221;<\/em> <\/span>a senior Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) official said.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0However, the official said &#8220;<span style=\"color: #800000;text-decoration: underline\"><strong>no decision&#8221;<\/strong><\/span> has been taken by the Ministry on it as yet.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0At present, the Central Bureau of Investigation functions under the <span style=\"color: #800000;text-decoration: underline\"><strong>Delhi Special Police Establishment (DSPE) Act<\/strong><\/span>.
