{"id":22276,"date":"2012-08-03T14:10:38","date_gmt":"2012-08-03T08:40:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.legalindia.in\/news\/?p=22276"},"modified":"2012-08-03T14:11:15","modified_gmt":"2012-08-03T08:41:15","slug":"ban-on-simi-upheld-by-tribunal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.legalindia.com\/news\/ban-on-simi-upheld-by-tribunal","title":{"rendered":"Ban on SIMI upheld by Tribunal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A <span style=\"color: #800000; text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>special tribunal<\/strong><\/span> has upheld the ban imposed by the Centre on <span style=\"color: #800000; text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI),<\/strong> <\/span>which has links with Pakistan-based terrorist outfits including Lashkar-e-Taiba and its front, <span style=\"color: #800000; text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Indian Mujahideen<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000; text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Justice V K Shali of the Delhi High Court<\/strong><\/span>, who heads the tribunal, submitted the report to the Home Ministry confirming the ban on SIMI.<\/p>\n<p>The order came after the <span style=\"color: #800000; text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Home Ministry<\/strong><\/span> on February 3 extended the ban on SIMI by two more years, a Home Ministry spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p>SIMI was declared outlawed on September 27, 2001 when it came to light that the outfit was involved in terrorist activities.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0The group was having close contacts with LeT and was charged with carrying out several terror strikes along with Indian Mujahideen.<\/p>\n<p>Though SIMI had challenged the government&#8217;s move in various courts and also before the<span style=\"color: #800000; text-decoration: underline;\"><strong> Special Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act tribunals<\/strong><\/span> on a number of occasions, it did not get any relief.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0The tribunal consisting of Justice Shali, a sitting Judge of Delhi High Court, was constituted to adjudicate whether there is sufficient cause for declaring the association unlawful.<\/p>\n<p>Source: PTI<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A special tribunal has upheld the ban imposed by the Centre on Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI), which has links with Pakistan-based terrorist outfits including Lashkar-e-Taiba and its front, Indian Mujahideen.
