{"id":22358,"date":"2012-08-06T14:17:59","date_gmt":"2012-08-06T08:47:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.legalindia.in\/news\/?p=22358"},"modified":"2012-08-06T14:19:37","modified_gmt":"2012-08-06T08:49:37","slug":"sc-notice-to-centre-on-press-council-of-indias-petition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.legalindia.com\/news\/sc-notice-to-centre-on-press-council-of-indias-petition","title":{"rendered":"SC notice to Centre on Press Council of India&#8217;s petition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <span style=\"color: #800000; text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Supreme Court<\/strong> <\/span>has sought the Centre&#8217;s stand on a plea by the <span style=\"color: #800000; text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Press Council of India<\/strong> <\/span>(PCI) against an Allahabad High Court order restraining media from reporting on movement of troops.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0A bench of justices<span style=\"color: #800000; text-decoration: underline;\"><strong> H L Dattu and C K Prasad<\/strong> <\/span>issued notice to the Union government, seeking its reply on a petition of Press\u00a0council of India.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0The high court had directed various Central and state government authorities on April 10<span style=\"color: #800000; text-decoration: underline;\"><strong> &#8220;to ensure that there is no reporting\/release of any news item by the print or electronic media on the movement of troops.&#8221;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0The petition filed by the office of Press Council of India Chairman and former apex court judge <span style=\"color: #800000; text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Markandeya Katju<\/strong><\/span>, has submitted that the high court&#8217;s order was in violation of the fundamental right under <span style=\"color: #800000; text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Article 19(1) (a) of the Constitution<\/strong><\/span>, granted to the media and every citizen of the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0The high court&#8217;s order had come on a PIL filed by a social activist relating to a report in <span style=\"color: #800000; text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>The Indian Express<\/strong><\/span> on April 4.
