The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Wednesday issued notice to the West Bengal government over three starvation deaths in a tea estate in Jalpaiguri district.<\/p>\n
Among those who reportedly died of starvation was a child.<\/p>\n
“Taking congnisance of news reports, we have issued notice to the West Bengal chief secretary giving him four weeks to report about the deaths of two women and a child resulting from hunger. Those who starved to death got no help at Kumlai Tea Estate under Malbazar in Jalpaiguri district,” an NHRC official said.<\/p>\n
The commission has observed that the contents of a report appearing in the press, if true, raise the serious issue of violation of the rights of workers.<\/p>\n
According to media reports of Aug 3, the Kumlai Tea Estate has been reeling under a financial crisis. Workers have not received their wages for two months, and rations for 62 weeks are pending.<\/p>\n
