The Meghalaya government Wednesday decided to form two committees to study the problem of influx and illegal immigrants and review the tenancy laws.<\/p>\n
Making a suo moto statement on the first day of the assembly session, Chief Minister Mukul Sangma said the committee on influx would be headed by Deputy Chief Minister Bindo M. Lanong, in-charge of law.<\/p>\n
A directorate of infiltration is being set up within the next few days to have a more effective check on illegal immigrants, the chief minister said.<\/p>\n
The Lanong-headed panel would include ministers, chief executive members of three district Councils, representatives from the apex bodies of traditional institutions and NGOs.<\/p>\n
“The mandate of the committee would be to review the situation of influx in the state and to suggest a multi-pronged strategy and a practical approach to tackle the problem,” Sangma said.<\/p>\n
Sangma said 39 labour inspectors’ post had been created in all the blocks for stringent implementation of the Inter-State Migrant Workmen (Regulation of Employment and Conditions of Service) Act, 1979.<\/p>\n
The second committee, headed by Chief Secretary W.M.S. Pariat, would examine the current laws and practices of tenancy and suggest measures to regulate them.<\/p>\n
