A local court has sentenced a former prison officer to five years’ imprisonment in connection with the custodial death of an accused in Beed jail three years ago.<\/p>\n
The court on Tuesday sentenced Beed jail’s former prison officer Dattatreya Sonwane to five-year rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of Rs5,000. In March 2009, Sonwane allegedly beat up an accused, Namdev Sable, who sustained injuries and subsequently died in hospital.<\/p>\n
Later, the deceased’s postmortem report mentioned head injury as the cause of death, following which the case was handed over to the local crime branch, which then filed a charge sheet in the case.<\/p>\n
After hearing the case, the district and sessions court yesterday concluded that Sonwane did not kill Sable intentionally and thus awarded him five years’ imprisonment along with the fine.<\/p>\n
