BJP national president Nitin Gadkari on Thursday issued a legal notice to RTI activist and IAC volunteer Anjali Damania over her \u201cbaseless and defamatory\u201d claims that he tried to cover up the irrigation scam in Maharashtra.<\/p>\n
Gadkari\u2019s legal notice to Damania faults her for \u201cgiving false statements to television channels\u201d, \u201cinsinuating\u201d his \u201cbusiness relations with Sharad Pawar\u201d, and having \u201ctried to dissuade\u201d her from exposing the irrigation scam. The legal notice sent through Shamshery & Associates, dated September 27, stated: \u201c…entire statements, you have stated are deliberate lie with an intention to slander my client and are designed to defame the reputation of my client, who, being national president of BJP, occupies a respected position in the political affairs of the nation as well as in society\u201d.<\/p>\n
Gadkari has denied having business relations with Pawar.<\/p>\n
The legal notice said that the BJP\u2019s state unit was the \u201cfirst to unearth the irrigation scam\u201d and demanded her to \u201ctender a public apology\u201d failing which he will initiate legal proceedings against Damania.<\/p>\n
Damania made these claims on Wednesday on the eve of the party\u2019s two-day national council meet, which is slated to discuss a resolution to amend the party\u2019s constitution and pave the way for a second consecutive term for the BJP president.<\/p>\n
