India-born US national Nooriya Haveliwala was convicted by a Mumbai special court for causing death due to rash and negligent driving.<\/p>\n
Special judge I.M. Bohri, who pronounced Haveliwala guilty under various sections of the Motor Vehicles Act and the Indian Penal Code, is likely to pronounce the quantum of punishment later Thursday.<\/p>\n
Haveliwala was arrested in January 2010, after she drove her car into six people on the Marine Drive in south Mumbai. Two persons, including a police sub-inspector, were killed and four others were injured in the incident.<\/p>\n
She was arrested after medical reports suggested she was under the influence of alcohol and drugs.<\/p>\n
The court had started the trial, examining witnesses in the case, in March 2012, and finished the hearings after the defence advocate concluded his arguments in October this year.<\/p>\n
In the chargesheet filed against her, the police charged her with culpable homicide not amounting to murder, causing grievous hurt, and rash and negligent driving, under relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act, the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act.<\/p>\n
