The Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) hailed the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHCHR) for asking China to resolve the grievances of people in Tibet.<\/p>\n
“The CTA is encouraged by the powerful statement of UNHCHR high commissioner Navi Pillay Friday,” Tibet’s prime minister-in-exile Lobsang Sangay said here.<\/p>\n
Pillay has urged the Chinese government to “promptly address the long-standing grievances that have led to an alarming escalation in desperate forms of protest, including self-immolations, in Tibetan areas”.<\/p>\n
Sangay said Pillay’s statement “is a true recognition of the urgent and tragic situation in Tibet”.<\/p>\n
According to the CTA, 56 Tibetans have set themselves on fire to protest China’s policies and to press their demand for freedom since March 2011.<\/p>\n
The Dalai Lama has lived in India since fleeing his homeland in 1959. The Tibetan government-in-exile is based in the hill town of Dharamsala.<\/p>\n
