A city court Friday denied anticipatory bail to an employee of a multinational company (MNC) who had allegedly raped a woman after meeting her through a popular matrimonial website. The accused even offered to marry her but Additional Sessions Judge Kamini Lau rejected his plea, saying it was a mere ploy to wriggle out of the criminal case.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn a nation which protects its women from non-consensual sex even if it is by her separated husband, the allegations made by the complainant about physical exploitation by a prospective groom under the pretext of marriage are serious,\u201d Lau said, rejecting the bail plea of Rehan Ghauri, a marketing executive with an MNC.<\/p>\n
The court took a serious view of Ghauri\u2019s alleged \u201cbetrayal\u201d and exploitation of the victim, a south Delhi resident whose profile was posted on the matrimonial site by her parents.<\/p>\n
\u201cSociety is surviving on faith and truth, and treachery has no place in civilised society. Marriage is a serious affair and no person can be allowed to be subjected to this kind of physical, mental and emotional exploitation by such non-serious suitors,\u201d the court said, dismissing the bail application.<\/p>\n
After coming across the woman\u2019s profile on the matrimonial website jeevansathi.com, Ghauri communicated with her, showing his intent to marry her, the police said.<\/p>\n
He allegedly became intimate with her and later forced her to enter into a physical relationship with the promise of marriage. The woman filed a police case after he backed out of the marriage proposal.<\/p>\n
The case was registered by her at Sangam Vihar police station under the Indian Penal Code Sections 420 (cheating) and 376 (rape) last month.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
