The Central Information Commission has asked the Municipal Corporation of Delhi to reveal the names of the companies which have illegally erected cell phone towers across the national capital.<\/p>\n
The decision came on an application filed by Karam Chand, a resident of Kashmere Gate area in central Delhi, seeking details of all the cell towers for which MCD had given permission and for which they have not given permission, and action taken, if any, against the illegal towers.<\/p>\n
In his order dated Feb 12, Information Commissioner Shailesh Gandhi directed MCD to provide all the information by March 5 and display it on their website as well.<\/p>\n
He also asked the MCD to reveal and display on their website if any action has been taken against officers in whose areas the illegal towers had come up.<\/p>\n
\u201cCopies evidencing such action will be provided. If no action has been taken, this will also be stated,\u201d Gandhi noted.<\/p>\n
According to the MCD, the national capital has around 2,500 illegal towers that give access to various telecommunication service providers.<\/p>\n
Last week, the MCD cleared a new policy for erecting cell phone towers in the city, and said no towers would be allowed in residential areas unless there is no alternative.
