The Delhi High Court on Friday issued notice to a public school seeking its explanation for an accident that led a girl becoming permanently disabled after she was asked to dive into a swimming pool that had little water.<\/p>\n
The court issued notice to the Remal Public School, Rohini and its two swimming coaches on a suit for damages of Rs.21 lakhs on behalf of Riya Gupta, who become “physically handicapped and permanently disabled” after the accident.<\/p>\n
“Riya Gupta, the class 8th student was asked by the two coaches to dive into the swimming pool knowing well that the water level of the swimming pool was not in accordance to the norms of the diving rules. The moment Riya dived into the swimming pool her head struck to the bottom of the swimming pool due to less water in it and Riya sustained severe head injury. Thereafter, she never returned to the normal life,” said Advocate Ashok Agarwal and Kusum Sharma appearing on behalf of Riya.<\/p>\n
“Riya was a brilliant student with the quality of participating in extra-curricular activities of the school. She was a good swimmer and an outstanding Athlete. She had brought laurels and appraisals to the school by winning prizes in various sports events,” the petition states.<\/p>\n
“She has become physically handicapped and permanently disabled to the extent of 75 percent. All her family members along with her are suffering from mental agony, shock and torture with the thought that she will never be able to lead a quality life. The father of the girl has spent lot of money and still spending on her treatment but the injuries are so severe that she is unable to recover and come back to normal,” Agarwal added while demanding claim from the school.<\/p>\n
