{"id":4488,"date":"2010-03-04T17:19:20","date_gmt":"2010-03-04T11:49:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.legalindia.in\/news\/?p=4488"},"modified":"2010-03-04T17:19:20","modified_gmt":"2010-03-04T11:49:20","slug":"lifer-to-five-kolkata-cops-upheld-for-murder","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.legalindia.com\/news\/lifer-to-five-kolkata-cops-upheld-for-murder","title":{"rendered":"Lifer to five Kolkata cops upheld for murder"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Calcutta High Court Wednesday upheld the life sentence to five police personnel convicted of killing a city police sergeant in 2003.<\/p>\n<p>A division bench of Justice Amit Talukdar and Justice Raghunath Ray upheld the sentence of five Kolkata Police Reserve Force constables for killing Bapi Sen, a traffic sergeant with Kolkata Police.<\/p>\n<p>Sen was severely assaulted by the five constables for protesting when they tried to molest a woman riding pillion on a motorcycle with one of her friends on the night of Dec 31, 2002. Sen, then 30, died at a city hospital after five days in coma.<\/p>\n<p>They were convicted of murder by a city court in 2004. Justice Basudeb Majumdar of city sessions court sentenced them to life imprisonment July 1, 2004.<\/p>\n<p>The convicts later moved the Calcutta High Court, challenging the lower court&#8217;s judgement.
