The Supreme Court Friday rejected a plea seeking direction to the central government to fly the ailing 86-year-old mother of the slain Tamil Tigers chief to Chennai for medical treatment.<\/p>\n
The mother of Velupillai Prabhakaran, Parvathi Ammal, 86, who is suffering from paralysis, is presently in Colombo.<\/p>\n
The apex court said that for coming to Chennai she or her counsel will have to follow directions of the Madras High Court and make a representation to the Tamil Nadu government.<\/p>\n
A bench of Justice P. Sathasivam and Justice H.L. Dattu told the petitioner lawyer R. Karuppan that the high court order favoured them and there was nothing in it that warranted the apex court\u2019s interference.<\/p>\n
The bench asked the petitioner counsel, \u201cIs it a case for interference by this (apex) court?\u201d<\/p>\n
Justice Sathasivam pointed to the high court order which recorded the submission of central government counsel that Parvathi Ammal or counsel Karuppan could make a representation to the state government for permission to visit Chennai.<\/p>\n
The high court April 30 told her and counsel Karuppan to make a representation to the state government. Within 15 days of receiving the request, the state government would refer it to the central government with its comments, it said.<\/p>\n
The final decision will be taken by the central government, it said.<\/p>\n
Justice Sathasivam referring to the high court order asked Karuppan what more he wanted by way of an apex court order.<\/p>\n
The apex court then asked Karuppan if he had made a representation to the state government as directed by the high court.<\/p>\n
To this, he replied in affirmative and said the matter was awaiting a decision by the central government.<\/p>\n
Prabhakaran, the founder leader of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), was killed along with his top lieutenants in May last year by the Sri Lankan military.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
