{"id":53109,"date":"2018-06-12T12:15:54","date_gmt":"2018-06-12T06:45:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.legalindia.com\/news\/?p=53109"},"modified":"2018-06-12T12:18:13","modified_gmt":"2018-06-12T06:48:13","slug":"nsa-6-held-for-violence-in-anti-sterlite-protests","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.legalindia.com\/news\/nsa-6-held-for-violence-in-anti-sterlite-protests","title":{"rendered":"NSA: 6 held for violence in anti-Sterlite protests"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Tuticorin (TN):<\/b>\u00a0Six people arrested for their alleged involvement in the violence during anti-Sterlite protests last month were today detained under the National Security Act (NSA), police said.<br \/>\n<img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3229 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.wakeuppost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/dhjprqlvtj-1527530523-300x158.jpg?resize=300%2C158&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"158\" \/><br \/>\nThe six were arrested on May 22 and are presently lodged in Palayamkottai Central Prison.<br \/>\nThey were detained under NSA as per the orders of the Home Secretary Niranjan Mardi, police said.<br \/>\nThe NSA empowers the Central and State governments to detain a person for maximum period of 12 months to prevent him\/her from acting in any manner prejudicial to national security.<br \/>\nThirteen people were killed in police firing on May 22 and 23 after protests for closure of the plant over pollution concerns turned violent in Tuticorin.<\/p>\n<p>The Tamil Nadu government had last month appointed a one-person Commission of Inquiry headed by a retired judge of the Madras High Court to probe the violence in Tuticorin.<\/p>\n<p>The State Human Rights Commission has also initiated an inquiry into the issue.<\/p>\n<p>On May 28, the government ordered the state Pollution Control Board to seal and &#8220;permanently&#8221; close the Vedanta group&#8217;s copper plant, following the violent protests.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tuticorin (TN):\u00a0Six people arrested for their alleged involvement in the violence during anti-Sterlite protests last month were today detained under the National Security Act (NSA), police said.
