It is convention for the law ministry to write to the Chief Justice asking for his recommendation on the man who will replace him.\u00a0Justice Gogoi created a stir as a judge of the Supreme Court in 2016, when he issued contempt notice against a retired judge of the court, Markandeya Katju.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Justice Gogoi started his legal career as an advocate in the Gauhati High court in 1978. Thereafter, he was appointed as a judge to the high court in 2001 in the Gauhati high court itself.
