The Delhi High Court Monday came down heavily on the Municipal Corporation of Delhi over the pathetic condition of roads in the capital just three months before the Commonwealth Games.<\/p>\n
‘Despite various directions given by this court, the picture appears to be more dismal than what is being shown to the court through the affidavits,’ said Justice Kailash Gambhir, seeking a status report from the civic agency in three weeks.<\/p>\n
The court’s remarks came on recent reports about traffic jams on various roads following short spells of rain.<\/p>\n
‘Roads have caved in due to water logging. Most of the main roads have witnessed long traffic jams, bringing the city to a standstill. With the Commonwealth Games in the offing and with this (current) situation, passing the roads would then be kettles of fish for this city,’ the court said.<\/p>\n
‘It seems that the job of road construction is shoddily executed as most of the roads do not even sustain the pressure of one spell of rain and, therefore, after every rainy season, the condition of the roads worsen and they lead to a sorry state,’ the court said.<\/p>\n
Pulling up the civic agency, the court said various road accidents take place due to pot holes. The Public Works Department and the MCD are totally insensitive to the plight of the citizens.<\/p>\n
Taking exception to the claims made by the MCD through an affidavit with regard to the testing standards for roads, the court said: ‘The situation is distressing for the motorists as the life of the vehicles also gets shortened after they are driven on bumpy roads.’<\/p>\n
The court’s order came on petition accusing the MCD of failure to maintain the roads in the city causing inconvenience to the general public.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
