The Delhi High Court Thursday sought the response of Delhi Police for not giving protection to a young couple who entered into an inter-religious marriage against the wishes of their parents, and have been receiving threats from their relatives.<\/p>\n
Hearing the couple’s plea, Justice Ajit Bharihoke asked the station house officer of Naraina in west Delhi to ensure and provide necessary protection to the couple. Police have been asked to submit a status report in two weeks.<\/p>\n
Kapil, 22, and Priya, 18, married Aug 31 at the Arya Samaj Vivah Mandir Trust in Delhi despite their parents’ opposition. Priya, who was Muslim, changed her religion to marry Kapil.<\/p>\n
A resident of Uttar Pradesh’s Baghpat district in Uttar Pradesh, she had known Kapil for last three years as he used to visit his uncle’s house which was next to her parents’ house.<\/p>\n
When her parents came to know about the affair, they decided to marry her to a local boy, but she managed to run away from her house Aug 28 and reached Delhi.<\/p>\n
Thereafter her parents lodged a case of kidnapping against Kapil at the Bhajanpura police station in north Delhi. Priya sent a letter by registered post to Baghpat’s district collector and senior superintendent of police informing them about all the facts and circumstances of the case and requesting them not to act on any false complaint lodged by her parents.<\/p>\n
The parents of the girl have threatened to kill them. Hearing their plea, the court expressed surprise as to why the Naraina police has not registered a case against the parents and relatives of the girl who are threatening them.<\/p>\n
It also asked the police to explain how an FIR was registered against the boy on the complaint of the father of the girl for her abduction in Delhi when the girl herself says that she left home on her own.<\/p>\n
‘How can you harass a couple in an FIR which has been registered without any jurisdiction,’ the court asked.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
