The National Association of Street Vendors of India (NASVI) Wednesday hailed the Supreme Court’s verdict on vendors’ right to carry on their business.<\/p>\n
Representing more than 540 street vendors organisations across 23 states of the country, it further demanded that a comprehensive legislation on the lines of National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) must be enacted to protect and promote livelihood of more than 10 million vendors of the country.<\/p>\n
‘It is the constitutional obligation of the union government to enact a law for the entire mass of street vendors living in India,’ said Arbind Singh, national coordinator of NASVI.<\/p>\n
Moreover, vendors face problems due to varying interpretations of the National Policy on Urban Street Vendors and the schemes framed under it by municipal bodies, police and high courts, Singh said.<\/p>\n
