{"id":7708,"date":"2010-12-11T17:09:40","date_gmt":"2010-12-11T11:39:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.legalindia.in\/news\/?p=7708"},"modified":"2010-12-11T17:09:40","modified_gmt":"2010-12-11T11:39:40","slug":"ex-mci-chiefs-election-to-gujarat-varsity-senate-challenged","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.legalindia.com\/news\/ex-mci-chiefs-election-to-gujarat-varsity-senate-challenged","title":{"rendered":"Ex-MCI chief&#8217;s election to Gujarat varsity senate challenged"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A group of doctors Friday filed a petition in the Gujarat High Court, seeking to disqualify Medical Council of India&#8217;s tainted former chief Ketan Desai from the senate of the Gujarat University.<\/p>\n<p>Desai was recently elected unopposed to the senate on a seat meant for a registered medical practitioner.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Desai managed to get elected &#8216;unopposed&#8217; to the senate in the most brazen manner for a seat exclusively for the registered medical graduates despite having his registration already cancelled by the MCI,&#8217; Dr. Kunal Saha, president of People for Better Treatment which filed the petition, told.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;The GU vice-chancellor and the Gujarat government were also made parties in the writ petition because they also did not take any step to prevent Desai,&#8217; Saha added.<\/p>\n<p>Desai was arrested in April this year for allegedly taking Rs. 2 crore bribe from a Punjab-based medical college.
