The home ministry is mulling a proposal to try rape cases in fast track courts, an official said Friday.

Sangeeta Verma, economic advisor to the women and child development ministry, told : ‘We completely agree with the demand for setting up fast track courts to try rape cases and have submitted the proposal to the home ministry. We are in talks with the home ministry now.’

Verma was speaking on the sidelines of a consultation on rising number of crime cases against women in the capital.

Stressing the need to hasten setting up of such courts for speedy trial, National Commission for Women (NCW) chairperson Girija Vyas said: ‘Stringent punishment of the culprit and trial of rape cases in fast track courts is very important if we want to reduce crime cases against women.’

Agreeing with the demand, Sandeep Goel, joint commissioner of police, said: ‘I completely agree that such cases, especially gangrape, should be tried in fast track courts. The Delhi Police commissioner has requested the Delhi High Court to put four cases, including the Dhaula Kuan gangrape of a BPO employee, in fast track court.’
