Gauhati High Court has rejected the interim anticipatory bail applications of controversial sitting Congress MLA Rumi Nath in connection with alleged links with a kingpin of a pan India auto theft gang and arms dealer Anil Chauhan who was arrested recently.
A single bench comprising Justice Indira Shah rejected two bail pleas of Nath yesterday filed in connection with two case registered at Dispur police station and at Azara police station.
Nath, who is an MLA from Borkhola in Cachar district, had filed for anticipatory bail on April nine following the arrest of her estranged second husband Jacky Zakir.
The first case was registered on the basis of a complaint lodged against her for allegedly receiving a stolen vehicle from Chauhan, while the case at Azara was registered in connection with Chauhan’s arrest on April three last.
Zakir, who is currently in police custody, was arrested on April 8 from his house at Badarpur in Karimganj district.
Nath’s personal security officer Bedabrata Barpatra Gohain was also in police custody after he was arrested from the Special Branch headquarters here.
During investigations, it was found that Chauhan, who is wanted in a number of cases in Delhi and Mumbai besides in other states, was issued assembly car passes allegedly on the recommendation of the Congress MLA.
The Assembly secretariat has also issued a notice asking her to explain why she recommended issuance of car passes to the notorious car lifter.
According to police, one of the luxury cars presently being used by Zakir is suspected to be a stolen one and sold by Chauhan to Nath who had allegedly ‘gifted’ it to him.
State Congress president Anjan Dutta also issued a showcause notice to Nath for her alleged involvement with the car lifter.
The controversial MLA had married Zakir in 2012 after converting to Islam and without divorcing her first husband and was subsequently assaulted by an irate mob at a Karimganj hotel in July 2012. The couple, however, parted last year and are living separately since then.
