Mumbai, Jan 8, The Special Investigating Team (SIT) has arrested former encounter specialist and senior Police Inspector Pradeep Sharma and five others, including two police personnel and three informers, for purportedly orchestrating fake encounter of Ramnarayan Gupta alias Lakhan Bhaiyya, alleged member of underworld don Chhota Rajan’s gang, in 2006.

Mr Sharma and others were called for questioning by the SIT team at Bandra Crime Branch office last evening and thereafter, they were arrested, police said here today.

Mr Sharma has a record of encounter of 112 gangsters, belonging to various gangs on his name.

The other accused are Tanaji Desai, Ratnakar Kamble (both police personnel), Akhil alias Bobby, Hitesh and Shailendra Pandey (all trusted informers of Sharma). All the six would be produced in Metropolitan Magistrate court, Andheri, later during the day.

The SIT, headed by Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) V N Prasanna, was constituted by the government on Bombay High Court’s direction to conduct an inquiry into the encounter of Gupta on basis of a petition filed by the deceased’s brother Advocate Ram Prasad alleging that his brother was killed in a fake encounter.

On November 11, 2006, police had received a tip-off that Bhaiya would be coming to meet his gang member at Nana-Nani park, Versova. They then allegedly killed him in a fake encounter at Nana-Nani park in Versova, Andheri in the western suburb.

The Deceased’s brother advocate Ramprasad had claimed that his brother was picked up from his house by police seven hours prior to his death and later he was killed in a fake encounter. In this regard, he had sent a telegram and fax messages to then police commissioner A N Roy and other top police officials expressing fear that his brother may have been killed in a fake encounter, Ram Prasad said.

Mr Gupta had filed a petition in the High Court, which issued directive to the state government to form a SIT to conduct inquiry into the encounter.
