The Bar Association of India (BAI) Thursday condemned the attack on lawyer Prashant Bhushan and demanded strict action against the right-wing attackers and the organisations they are affiliated to.
“We urge the authorities to take stern action against the miscreants and the organisations they represent within the parameters and due process of law,” BAI president and advocate Anil Divan said in a statement.
“This is an attack on the legal profession,” he added.
Bhushan, a key member of Team Anna, was Wednesday attacked by three members of right-wing organisations for remarks that he made in Varanasi two weeks ago supporting a referendum in Kashmir.
Blaming the lack of tight security as the reason behind the incident, the BAI demanded stepping up of security in and around court complexes.
Justifying Bhushan’s right to make statement on Kashmir, Divan said: “Every Indian citizen and every human being is entitled to express his views without being intimidated in any manner.”
Bhushan, a key member of Team Anna, was Wednesday attacked by three members of Sri Ram Sena and the Bhagat Singh Kranti Sena for remarks on Kashmir.
