A local court here Saturday sentenced two men to seven years rigorous imprisonment in an over two-year-old case of carjacking and robbery. Two others were acquitted.

According to the police, a businessman travelling by car from Delhi to Chandigarh May 27, 2009, was waylaid by unidentified assailants, who drove him home here in upscale Sector 33 and decamped with his car, jewellery and cash.

Five people were arrested in this case.

‘Court has awarded seven year sentence to Rajiv and Bhupinder Singh whereas Jaipal and Harinder Singh have been acquitted as the victim could not recognize them in the court. Trial of fifth accused Chandan is still pending in the court,’ said the prosecution lawyer.

Lalit Behl, a Chandigarh-based businessman, had arrived in New Delhi from the Philippines and his driver picked him up from the airport. He was waylaid on the highway near Haryana’s Karnal town, around 100 km from Chandigarh.

After learning that Behl didn’t have anything valuable with him, the accused forcibly drove him to his house here, held him and his family hostage for over two hours before making off with their valuables. While three people sat in his car, two others accompanied them in their vehicle.
