Terming the scheme of providing justice to Undertrial Prisoners (UTPs) a ‘silent revolution in the judiciary’, Union Law Minister Veerappa Moily today said the scheme had been successful due to the coordinated approach between the judiciary and executive.

Altogether 1,30,651 UTPs have been released since January this year, when the national mission for delivery of justice and legal reforms undertrial programme was launched.

There are in excess of 3 lakh UTPs in India, forming 70 per cent of the jail population, and only 30 per cent are actually convicted and imprisoned.

Hailing the scheme as a success till now, Mr Moily said, ”It is a silent revolution in the judiciary and is bringing out good results.” The scheme is being implemented in consonance with various High Courts of the country and is aimed at decongesting jails.

The Union Minister also lauded the coordinated approach between the judiciary and executive for ensuring the success of the scheme.

Mr Moily was here to attend a discussion on ‘Perspective / Action Plans for effective utilisation of grants by the 13th Finance commission, e-court, among others’ of the North Eastern states, including Sikkim’
