The Government Law College, Thiruchirappalli is one of six government law colleges in the state of Tamil Nadu, India.Like the rest of the law colleges in Tamil Nadu, it is administered by Tamil Nadu’s Department of Legal Studies, and affiliated to Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University.
The Tiruchirappalli college was opened in 1979, the same year as the Coimbatore college, joining existing government law colleges at Chennai and Madurai.
The college has undergraduate and graduate programs, and maintains a hostel for girl students.
History:
In order to fullfill the needs of the aspirants from the central part of the state, the government decided to establish a law college at Tiruchirappalli (G.O. Ms No: 1407 Education dated 2.8.1979) affiliated to the University of Madras. The Blue print for this college was prepared by Prof. S. Master Sankaran M.L., then Director of Legal Studies.
Prof. B. Santhakumari M.L., was appointed by the Government as Special Officer for completing the organizational arrangement in establishing the Law College at Tiruchirappalli. The Law College Tiruchirappalli started functioning at Periyar E.V.R College Campus, Tiruchirappalli – 620 020 from 18.1.1980. Due to the inadequacy of accommodation, the Law College was shifted to Tmt. Pappammal Anna Chathirm, East Chinthamani, Tiruchirappalli – 620 002. The college has attained its full fledged satus and prepares students for the Degree of Bachelor of General Laws and Bachelor of Laws.
From 1982 – 83 onwards, the college is affiliated to Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli. From 1997 – 98 onwards the college is affiliated to Tamilnadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University , Chennai.
