The appellant Shri Sanjeev Kumar Mohta vide his RTI application dated 22/09/2008
sought information on payment of death claim in respect of 03 LIC policies taken by his father
who died in August, 1985. He sought to know from the CPIO the status regarding payment in
respect of 03 policies to the nominee. According to the appellant the payment is not yet paid.
2. CPIO LIC vide his order dated 26/11/2008 that since the policies pertained to a very old
period the policy dockets and ledger sheets were not available and, therefore, could not be
provided. He also directed him to approach their Branch Office, Ajmer since it appeared that
the case had been handled by them.
3. Not being satisfied the appellant preferred first appeal dated 12/03/2009 which was
disposed of by FAA by his order dated 31/03/2009 in which he informed the appellant that
even after thorough search the records could not be traced and had been destroyed as per the
provisions governing the same.
4. The appellant has brought the matter before the Commission in second appeal.
5. The matter was heard today through video conferencing. Both parties were present as
above. Respondent submitted that their Branch Office at Transport Nagar, Jaipur was handling
the case when the policies were taken in 1975.
6. Appellant stated that their Branch Office, Jaipur had been very helpful and have offered
opportunity for inspection of old records which had been undertaken and which had been
revealed that only live policies had been transferred from Ajmer Office to Jaipur Office and
that records of old policies had remained with Ajmer Office.
7. Appellant also provided the respondent with photocopies of premium payment from
bank in respect of the above policies.

8. Undoubtedly, information being sought is very old and would not be easily traceable.
CPIO, LIC, Ajmer is directed to provide appellant with an opportunity for inspection so that he
can assist them in tracing the old records from ledgers lying in their record rooms.
9. The opportunity may be offered to the appellant within one week of receipt of the
order.
10. With these directions, the matter is disposed of.
