Title: Need to release Central assistance for providing relief and rehabilitation to the flood-affected people in Karnataka.

SHRI IQBAL AHMED SARADGI (GULBARGA): The State Government of Karnataka had submitted two memoranda on the heavy rain/flood damages experienced in the State and had demanded compensation and assistance from the Centre to the tune of Rs. 1,91,727.30 lakhs. In addition, 1.17 lakh MTs of food grains are required for employment generation.

A detailed statement showing amount required for relief, rescue and emergent works due to heavy rains/floods during August 2007 were attached to these memoranda, which includes, among other things, Rs. 3037.23 lakhs for Gratuitous Relief; Rs. 54,678.27 lakhs for Assistance to small and marginal farmers; Rs. 10,000 lakhs for Employment Generation; Rs. 112.50 lakhs for Assistance to Fishermen; Rs. 634.80 lakhs for Assistance to artisans in handicrafts sector by way of subsidy for repair/replacement of damaged equipments; Rs. 56.16 lakhs for emergency supply of drinking water in rural areas and urban areas; Rs. 150 lakhs for provision of medicines, disinfectants, insecticides for prevention of outbreak of epidemics and Rs. 100 lakhs for Draining off flood water in affected areas.

As the situation in Karnataka is serious and large number of people are affected, I urge upon the Centre to seriously consider both the memoranda and release necessary financial assistance and the foodgrains at the earliest.
