Title: Need for creation of a separate railway zone with its headquarter at Nagpur in Maharashtra- Laid.

SHRI VILAS MUTTEMAWAR

(NAGPUR) : The recent announcement for the creation of seven new railway zones has greatly hurt the aspirations of the people of Nagpur who have been urging upon the Government to create a separate zone with its Headquarter at Nagpur. Nagpur is the second capital of Maharashtra and has a population of about 35 lakhs. With the existing size, population, workload, accessibility, traffic pattern and other operating and administrative requirements consistent with the needs of economy and efficiency, the creation of a separate zone with its headquarter at Nagpur has become the absolute necessity.

It appears that two new zones have been created with their headquarters at Raipur and Bilaspur in one State without any detailed examination and not taking into consideration the importance of Nagpur accruing due to its central location and other inherent advantages.

It was assured way back in 1999 that the interest of Nagpur would be kept in view while reviewing the reorganization of railway zones.

I would, therefore, urge upon the Hon’ble Railway Minister to create a separate railway zone with its headquarter at Nagpur.
