A Lok Adalat on Saturday settled an accident claim in a record six months, awarding Rs 79 lakh to the family of a 37-year-old Kanjurmarg resident, who lost his life in an accident on November 12, 2013. Organized by the District Legal Services Authority, the Lok Adalat was held in the Thane court.
Disposing the case, the Motor Accident Claim Tribunal (MACT) panel—under retired judge S A Dwivedi—passed the judgment, directing SBI General Insurance to pay Rs 79 lakh to the victim’s wife.
“This case has set a benchmark in MACT’s history by disposing the matter in a record time. The amount happens to be huge. Both the insurance firm and victim’s family agreed for an early mutual settlement with a negotiated amount of Rs 79 lakh, based on the investigator’s report of the accident,” said Himanshu Thanawala, advocate for SBI General Insurance.
