NEW DELHI: Fourteen days after the Supreme Court of Dubai passed an order to extradite AgustaWestland the UAE has extradited Christian Michel to India the alleged middleman in the multimillion-dollar AgustaWestland helicopter deal.

The 54-year-old is wanted in the Rs. 3,600 crore VVIP chopper deal, which involves the purchase of 12 luxury helicopters for use by the President, Prime Minister and other VIPs, by the UPA government led by Manmohan Singh. A non-bailable warrant has been issued against Michel and he will be taken for medical examination tomorrow.

In November, the Court of Cassation had upheld a lower court order which said that Michel could be extradited. Michel worked with the company since the 1980s and before that his father had also been a consultant of the company for India.

Officials said Swaraj’s presence in Dubai for a meeting of the India-UAE Joint Commission helped push the process. In 2007, the UPA government had signed a contract to purchase the luxury helicopters.
