Building collapse case: court rejects bail pleas of 2 accused

A local court has rejected the bail applications of two accused arrested in connection with a case relating to the 2013 building collapse, which left 74 people dead, in the district. The under-construction Lucky Compound building located in Mumbra near Shil Phata in the district, collapsed in April, 2013, leaving 74 people dead and 60 others injured.

Special Judge V V Bambarde turned down the bail pleas of the accused duo– contractor Dinesh Prajapati and middleman Arfan Raut– last evening. Their counsel Majeed Memon had applied for bail on various grounds. However, Special Public Prosecutor Shishir Hiray argued that they do not deserve bail. “Even a common man can say that the quality of the under-construction building was substandard and it would come collapse any time, which is what happened and claimed lives of so many people,” he said.

He also told the court that they do not not deserve any sympathy and should not be granted bail. As many as 27 people, including senior civic officials, corporator, middlemen, builders, contractors, policemen, etc were arrested in the case. However, all others, except Prajapati and Raut, are currently out on bail.
