Islamabad High Court suspends Jail Sentences of Nawaz Sharif, DaughterMaryam Nawaz

NEW DELHI: The Islamabad High Court on Wednesday ordered the release former premier Nawaz Sharif, his daughter and son in law Mohammad Safdar in the Avenfield corruption reference case. Sharif’s supporters cheered as the Islamabad High Court suspended the 10-year jail term of the three-time premier.

A two-judge bench comprising of justices Athar Minallah and Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb gave the judgment on petitions filed by Nawaz, Maryam and Captain Safdar challenging the Avenfield verdict against them. The high court ordered their release suspending the sentences a lower court handed them in July over the purchase of upscale apartments in London

Sharif, Maryam and Safdar were also directed to submit bail bonds worth Rs 500,000 Pakistani rupees each. The ruling comes almost two months after Sharif’s party lost a general election to the party of new Prime Minister Imran Khan.

The former PM was convicted in leaked Panama Papers show involvement in offshore companies including two used to buy luxury homes in London.
