A Rayagada court today sentenced a prominent Maoist to 10 years in jail and a fine of Rs 1 lakh for indulging in various terror activities.

The order was given by Rayagada District and Session Judge Biswajit Das against Maoist leader Gameli Chinna Rao alias Santu.

The court stipulated that if the Maoist failed to pay the fine, he would undergo an additional jail term of one year.

Gameli, who hails from Vishakapatnam district in Andhra Pradesh, carried a cash reward of Rs 4 lakh on his head declared by the government of that state.

He was arrested for organising for rebel activities in Rayagada and Koraput districts and was convicted under various sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act of 1967 and the Explosive Substance act.

Acting on a tip off, the police had arrested Gameli on May 7, 2013 from a place near Phulokona chhack in Rayagada police station area while he was on his way to Rayagada from Bandhugaon-Narayanpatna area of bordering Koraput district.
