Chennai, Sep 7  In a sudden development, Nalini, one of the convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case whose death penalty was commuted to life, was today shifted from Puzhal Central Prison on the city outskirts to Vellore Central Prison.

Nalini, who was lodged in Vellore Prison for the last 20 years, was shifted to Puzhal Prison on security grounds a couple of months back.

Nalini is the wife of V Sriharan alias Murugan, who was awarded death penalty along with T Suthendraraja alias Santhan and A G Perarivalan alias Arivu in the case.

President Prathiba Devisingh Patil had rejected the Mercy pleas of Murugan, Santhan and Perarivalan following which the Vellore Prison authorities had fixed their hanging for September 9.

However, the Madras High Court had on August 30 stayed the hanging for eight weeks on writ pleas filed by the three Rajiv convicts.

At this stage, Nalini had applied to the prison authorities seeking permission to meet her husband.

Police sources told UNI that based on her request she was shifted back to Vellore Central Prison.

She was escorted from Puzhal to Vellore amid tight security today.

She would be lodged in Special Cell for women in the Vellore Prison, the sources added.
