New Delhi, 7 September 2011, A Blast took place outside the most crowded entry gate to the Delhi high court complex on killing 9 people and 50 people seriously injured. The explosion took place around morning 10.15 outside the gate no.5 of the Delhi High court .
The area was crowded with visitors seeking gate passes to enter the premises. Ambulances and fire tenders were rushed to the spot, injured people were taken to AIMS, RML and Sufdurjung hospital. According to Special Police Commissioner Dharmendra Kumar, initial estimates show at least 24 have been injured.
Police officials say that it was a high intensity blast and lawyers have been asked to vacate the court premises. The site has been cordoned off. The explosion took place outside Gate 5 where nearly 200 people were waiting in queue to get passes for entry into the court complex. The nature and magnitude of the blast was immediately not known. Officers said the bomb was kept inside a brief case.
The Ministry of Home Affairs is monitoring the situation. According to sources 9 people dead and at least 50-55 people were injured in the explosion and some of them are in a critical condition.
In the month of May, a minor explosion also took place outside the Delhi high court. It was a low intensity explosive that went off without causing any damage. The explosive was kept in a white polythene bag near a lawyer’s car parked at Gate No 7 on the service road.
Top officials of Delhi police including Special Commissioner (law and order) Dharmendra Kumar and Joint Commissioner of Special Cell R S Krishnaiah have rushed to the spot. Joint Commissioner (Crime) Sandip Goyal and Special Commissioner P N Aggarwal also joined them. Kumar said it was too early to ascertain the exact nature of the blast. He declined to speculate whether the blast was of low intensity or high intensity. It is in the second time in four months that a blast has occurred outside the Delhi High Court complex. In the past few years, the Supreme Court and High Court complexes have been on the hit-list of terrorist organisations.
