NGT seeks status report on desilting of Inderpuri drain

The National Green Tribunal has directed the North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) to submit a status report on desilting of the Inderpuri drain here on a plea alleging indiscriminate dumping of municipal solid waste in it.

A vacation bench comprising Justice Jawad Rahim and expert member Ajay A Deshpande asked the NDMC and the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) to submit the report within three weeks.

“It is stated on behalf of NDMC that desilting of the storm water drain is being done on priority but because of inflow of sewage due to defective pipeline installed by the DJB, the process has become difficult.

“However, the process continues and it is assured that within short period the desilting would be completed making the storm water drain free flow. In the circumstances, we are granting three weeks time for submission of status report by all concerned,” the bench said.

The matter is now listed for hearing on July 13.

The direction came while hearing a plea filed by local resident Bharat Bhushan Uppal seeking directions for removal of municipal solid waste in the area and cleaning of the drain.

Highlighting the pathetic attitude of government officials, the plea had alleged that the place has become a breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

The tribunal had earlier issued notices to the Delhi government, Delhi Jal Board and NDMC in the matter.

It had slammed the civic bodies over an overflowing garbage dumping site (dhalao) and the blocked drain in Inderpuri and asked them to immediately clean the drain.
