The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Monday sought a report from West Bengal over the alleged sterilization of over 100 women by two doctors in a day without ensuring basic healthcare facilities.

“Notice has been sent to the principal secretary, health, West Bengal, and district magistrate of Malda, returnable in six weeks,” said an NHRC official.

Reportedly, the operations were performed at a camp organised at Manikchak village health centre. After the surgery, the women were left in the open outside the health centre for recuperation.

Some of them were sent to their homes by rickshaws even without keeping them under a mandatory period of observation after the surgery.
