Underscoring the need for removing lacunas in various laws for speedy disposal of cases and also getting justice, Jammu and Kashmir Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs Ali Mohammad Sagar urged people to go by the religious teachings which guide and command us to lead a pious life, free from criminal tendencies or aberrations.

Mr Sagar was speaking at a valedictory function of the three-dayss All India Conference on criminology organised by the faculty of Law, University of Kashmir in collaboration with Indian society of Criminology Chennai and Bureau of Police Research and Development, New Delhi.

He also called for introspection within the individuals and members of the society so that the various criminal incidents and tendencies were controlled.

”We should also take into account our moral, cultural and ethical values which have been guiding us through centuries of peaceful existence devoid of any criminal incident or history, he maintained..

The Minister for Forests Mian Altaf Ahmad while praising the role of Indian Judiciary for its unbiased approach said we should also devise ways and means by to effectively provide speedy justice to the people. He further asked the organisers that the recommendations of the Conference be emulated.

The Minister for Higher Education Abdul Gani Malik while highlighting the importance of holding such conferences, said these were very essential to educate people about the need for having criminal justice.

Vice Chancellor Kashmir University Prof Riaz Punjabi said the new situations leading to change in different countries of the world have accentuated the need of having new mechanism to counter the growth of criminal incidents. He also called for establishment of Nyay Panchayats in rural areas which would go a long way in establishing justice in these areas and people would be getting speedy justice at their doorsteps.

Several papers on police reforms, prison reforms and criminal justice were presented during the conference. The basic objective of holding the conference was to find out ways and means for speedy, fair trails for effective punishments and alternatives to imprisonment and also find the ways and means by which crime rate could be controlled.
