SC to hear Haryana on Panchayat polls criteria laws

The Supreme Court on Thursday stays a law in Haryana that has makes it education qualifications mandatory for panachayat polls candidates.

The plea was filed by the  All India Democratic Women’s Association, the court has issued a notice to the Haryana government.

As per the law, general category candidates must have passed class 10, while women and Dalit candidates needed to clear class 8. The law was passed by the Haryana state assembly.

The law also demands that the candidates should not have criminal conviction, pending electricity bills or loan payments.

The Haryana assembly passed the law after Punjab and Haryana high court stayed a similar ordinance issued by the BJP government.

Over a crore voters will be participating in the Haryana panchayat polls which will be held in three phases on October 4, 11 and 18.
