For seeking an order to cancel the notification issued by the west Bengal government to hold the panchayadt elections later this month, the State Election Commission (SEC) moved to the Calcutta High court.

The state government, in a recent notification, announced it would hold the election in two phases–April 26 and April 30– despite the SEC’s objection.

The bench of Justice Biswanath Samaddar, where the plea was moved, directed the SEC to file the petition before the court explaining the reason why it was against the state government’s notification.

The BJP also moved another petition before the bench seeking scrapping of the State Panchyat Act, enacted by the previous Left Front government.

Both the petitions are likely to come up for hearing today.
