Providing wrong information under the Right to Information (RTI) Act could be prove costly with a senior Haryana official directing that action be taken against erring staff.

State Chief Secretary Urvashi Gulati has issued directions to all the departments to fix responsibility and take action under the Government Employees Conduct Rules against those erring officials who provide wrong information under the RTI Act, a spokesman said Sunday.

The move follows the realisation that several departments were ending up spending more money in getting discrepancies removed and appearing before the information commission after being accused of providing wrong information.

‘Directions have also been issued to calculate the expenditure incurred by way of TA (touring allowance) and DA (daily allowance), fuel charges of the vehicles and time taken while locating the discrepancies,’ he said.

The direction also said the amount spent on this must be recovered from the concerned official within a period of one month, the spokesman added.

The chief secretary’s circular stated that giving wrong information under the RIT was not only the violation of provisions but also reflected ‘serious negligence, callousness and irresponsiveness on the part of the concerned officers.’
