2,068 alleged staged shootouts in India, UP tops list

According to the National Human Rights Commission, Overall 2,068 cases of alleged staged shootouts were reported from across the country in the past 20 years, with Uttar Pradesh reporting the maximum such cases.

Panel member, Justice (retired) BC Patel said “Uttar Pradesh witnessed 984 encounters (shootouts), which is maximum in comparison to other states”

Uttar Pradesh was followed by states of Assam, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh where 229, 124 and 120 such incidents took place respectively. Only 16 cases were reported from Gujarat in this period.

Uttrakhand saw 58 cases, Jharkhand 42, Chhattisgarh 19, Tamil Nadu 35, Karnataka 42 and Haryana 29.

Delhi reported 55 such cases while Goa, Himachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nangaland, Sikkim, and Chandigarh recorded no cases, as per the data given by the NHRC.

Patel told the NHRC has recommended compensation, amounting to a total of Rs.110,130,000, for the kin of people killed in these shootouts with police, paramilitary and defence forces. Of this, Rs.79,800,000 was recommended in cases of shootouts with police.

Patel also said that the number of shootouts has come down a lot in the past few years.
