Calcutta High Court Commences Hearing on PIL Regarding Jadavpur University First-Year Student’s Death Linked to Alleged Ragging

The Calcutta High Court has initiated the hearing of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) addressing the demise of a first-year student at West Bengal’s Jadavpur University. The student’s passing is believed to be connected to alleged ragging incidents involving fellow students.

The PIL was submitted by Kalyan Banerjee, a Member of Parliament from the Trinamool Congress (TMC), inquiring about the absence of CCTV camera installations in various areas of the university campus.

Kalyan Banerjee brought attention to the plea on August 16, with a focus on the demise of the BA student at Jadavpur University.

Subsequent to this, the university’s faculty dean reportedly resigned from the position. In his resignation letter, Professor Subenoy Chakraborty cited personal reasons for his decision.

The incident involves Swapnodeep Kundu (18), a Bengali (Honours) student, who tragically fell from a second-floor hostel balcony on August 9 at approximately 11:45 pm. To date, a total of 12 individuals, comprising both current students and alumni, have been arrested as part of the investigation into his passing.

Among the apprehended suspects are individuals who have graduated from the university as well as those currently enrolled. Those arrested include Md. Arif, a third-year Civil Engineering student; Md. Asif Azmal, a fourth-year Electrical Engineering student; Ankan Sarkar, another third-year Civil Engineering student; Saptak Kamilya, a former student of Environmental Science; Asit Sardar, a former student of the Sanskrit Department; and Suman Naskar.

A Kolkata Police official disclosed that two individuals who were initially on the run were apprehended in Baruipur, located in South 24 Parganas district.

Earlier today, a Jadavpur University student in West Bengal reportedly attempted to end his life due to alleged “police harassment” amid ongoing investigations into the death of a first-year undergraduate student.
