In a recent address, Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud emphasized that courts should not adopt technology begrudgingly, solely because of directives from the top or an assertive Chief Justice. His remarks came in the context of a recent order mandating High Courts and tribunals to provide hybrid hearings for lawyers and litigants.

CJI Chandrachud stated, “Our move towards a technology-friendly legal system must be complemented by a change in the mindset of every judge, member of the bar, registry official, and administrative staff. In our revolution to make courtrooms across the country accessible to lawyers and litigants, we must not leave anyone behind.”

He made these remarks during the inaugural function of the platinum jubilee celebrations of the Rajasthan High Court on October 14. Notably, the Rajasthan High Court features a unique video conferencing facility that allows counsel from different locations to argue before the bench at another location, showcasing the potential of technology in the legal system.

CJI Chandrachud also addressed the normalized struggles faced by women lawyers, acknowledging their remarkable dedication in juggling familial and professional responsibilities. He urged introspection on why such experiences had become the norm and emphasized the need for institutions to take responsibility for change.

Additionally, the CJI highlighted the importance of providing skill training to court staff to equip them for modern workforce challenges. He mentioned the redesignation of jamadaars at the Supreme Court as ushers and the change in their uniforms, reflecting the changing landscape of India and aspirations for the future.
