The Panjab University Regional Centre, Ludhiana was in the beginning started as a Panjab University Extension Library in the year 1959 to cater to the requirements of the intellectual residents of Ludhiana for a quality library where one could get good books and a quiet place to study. The Panjab University Chandigarh, the University Grants Commission, and the United States Embassy in India contributed to the setting up of this library. The library was formally opened for service in July 1960. This library that was started initially as a collection of 43,000 today boasts of a collection of 1, 75,000 books, periodicals, journals, and newspapers.

Since its inception the library provides wide range of library and information services to its users and tries to fulfill their intellectual thirst. Library subscribes to more than 110 national & international journals on various subject streams. At present the total library membership is more than 2100. Now we are moving towards complete computerization, automation, and air-conditioning of Panjab University Extension Library Ludhiana.

The Panjab University Regional Centre (PURC), Ludhiana was set up in 2003 on the campus of Panjab University Extension library by then Vice Chancellor Prof K.N. Pathak. A separate academic block was constructed with a grant of Rupees One Crore provided by Shri Lajpat Rai, then Member of Parliament from the MPLADS scheme. The first academic program started was the LLB . Three year course conducted in the evening. Subsequently, a five year B.A.L.L.B. course was started in the morning. Both these law courses have become highly popular( and there is now a very large waiting list of applicants for admission to both the LLB-Three year course and BALLB . Five year course at PURC, Ludhiana.

During the year 2007, the MBA (Full Time) was begun by Prof R.C. Sobti, the present Vice Chancellor of Panjab University Chandigarh with the formation of University Business School (UBS), Panjab University Regional Centre, Ludhiana. During a short span of four years, the UBS Ludhiana has carved a niche for itself in management education and research. This B-School has excellent academic performance and excellent placements. The admissions to UBS Ludhiana are made through the CAT examination conducted by the Indian Institutes of Management (IIM), for which the UBS Ludhiana has been duly registered as a non-IIM institution with the IIMs.

The KCL Institute of Law is a unit of KCL Education Charitable Trust, a non proft organisaion which is already running many educational institutions.The sapling of Khalsa College Lyallpur Charitable Trust was first laid down in 1960. It has now bloomed into a chain of full fledged, independent Colleges, affiliated to the G.N.D.U. upto Post Graduate standard. The Department of Laws at Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar was established in the year 1972 as an evening institution having LL.B. Course for employed students only. In 1982, the department started the morning classes and in 1983, teaching of LL.M. was started. The Department now offer Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) and Master of Laws (LL.M.) Course. LL.M. Two years Course is open to full-time students only. There is also a provision for research leading to Ph.D. Degree.

By now, nearly seven thousand five hundred students have obtained LL.B. Degree from the Department. Nearly one hundred and fifty students have completed LL.M. and more than 30 students have been awarded degree of Ph.D. Besides, four hundred students have completed Post-Graduate Diploma in Taxation Law.

Many of the former students of the Law Department are now occupying prominent places in the Indian Administrative Services (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS) Indian Police Service (IPS) and other Allied Services as well as in the State Civil and Judicial Services. A sizeable majority has joined the legal profession and a few of them have joined the academic and teaching profession.

The Army Institute of Law (AIL) was established in July 1999 under the aegis of Army Welfare Education Society (AWES). AIL was inaugurated by Lt. Gen. H B Kala, PVSM, AVSM, SC, the then GOC-in-C HQ Western Command on 15 July 1999. It shifted to its permanent location at Sector-68, Mohali on 21 July 2003. AIL Mohali has been inaugurated by HE Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, President of India on 01 Dec 2003. The Institute is running 5-year degree course in law after 10+2, primarily for the wards of serving and ex-servicemen of Army. However 20 percent of the total number of seats is available for the civilians too. Out of this 15 percent are reserved for Punjab Residents and 5 percent for All India Civil Category.

University Institute of Legal Studies (UILS) was established as constituent department of Panjab University, in the academic session 2004-05. During a short span of time, it has emerged as one of the premier legal Institute with a unique blend of tradition and modernity. Its mission is to equip the students with the skills to comprehend and diagnose the intricacies of various legal and other inter-disciplinary issues and devise solutions to these problems through analysis and reasoning. The stimulating and interactive academic environment of the Institute helps to hone the ‘DRAIN’ .Drafting, Research, Advocacy, Interviewing and Negotiation- skills of the students. To accomplish this, the Institute arranges a number of curricular and extra-curricular activities. Students are trained in essence of the substantive laws, techniques of procedural laws, methods of client counseling and skills in legal and social sciences research etc. The Moot Court Competitions, Client Counseling Sessions, Quiz Contests, Seminars, Group Discussions and Extension Lectures etc. are a regular feature of the academic calendar of the Institute.
